Artist's Comments

For my non-objective painting class. It's a response to the critiques I got from my Tally series, where people liked the concept, but they felt there wasn't enough substance and meaning behind them. There are 9 of these 4 inch pvc pipes. I sanded them down to clean them off, then painted stripes on each one.
To determine the colors and width of the stripes, I would take six images of a famous artwork, and I'd composite them together on Photoshop. I'd then take one inch samples, and average it. Then I'd simplify the stripes, and voila! I have a stripe sample.
You can see this process at the bottom of this scrap I uploaded:

Here's the painting of the pipes on Youtube. I got this cool timelapse:

I did the whole physical part of the work all in one night. I came to the art building at about noon, went and bought the pipes, and did all the sanding and painting. I finished at 2 in the morning, after stopping only to let the paint dry and to go get dinner. I was exhausted.

At our critique on monday, my professor absolutely loved them. He said they were almost show-worthy, which sort of scared me to be honest. I'm a freshman, and he thinks I could almost have a senior show worthy series on my hands. Yikes.
Anyways, he thinks I should continue with these, but work on making them less painterly. He offered to do a tutorial with me where we'd make a lathe to spin them, and then I'd use professionally mixed latex paints and spray them onto the pipes. The only catch is that would be pretty expensive. This series right here costed me $70, and I only bought the pipes.

Either way, expect to see some other things like this.

The individual works are titled Courbet, Van Eyck, Da Vinci, Picasso, Untitled, Ross, Matisse, Van Gogh, and Lucy, respectively.
Kudos to the first one who can name all the specific works these are based on.

The final product is traditional. I'm going to move this to notes as soon as I get a photo of the finished product.

I really like these.
I think you should do the professor lesson thing. It's a good opportunity, even if it is expensive. Maybe you could sell the end result if you're concerned about cash.

Haha we were finalizing our class sign ups for next year, and I mentioned it to him sort of offhand. He thought I was a sophomore this year. And it would be a senior seminar thing. So I've got some time to kill lol
